MINOR FIRE AT GCB TOWER

There was a minor fire incident at the Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) towers at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle on Accra yesterday.

The said incident sent the staff to run for safety, in an interview with Today a staff of the bank who gave his name as Eugene said that he was at the first floor when he saw some colleagues rushing to the car park, he further asserted that smoke came from the ceiling in the third floor which served as offices for electronic and corporate banking and IT, which triggered the bank’s fire alarm system causing water to sprinkle on the floor.

Bank officials explained that there was a leakage of water on the 5th floor which the bank had leased to Africanonline moved to the other floors and seeped into some electrical ducts and gave a few sparks thereby raising concerns for safety.

 The Chief Operations Officer at the bank, Mr. Kojo Addai-Mensah told journalists that the situation was under control.

He explained the whole building was evacuated as they alerted the Fire Service and the police. Pockets of workers were seen discussing the incident. The incident also drew crowds of passers-by, mainly travellers and traders to scene.

“The Fire Service has since inspected the whole building and were satisfied that the bank could resume work”, Mr Mensah added. He said the incident was going to affect its operations but pleaded with their clients to exercise restraint and further assured them that their monies were safe.
